This study was an evaluation of the current status of the use of instructional materials in teaching health education in secondary schools. The study took place in a rural Local Education Authority in the Southern region of Nigeria (Bayelsa State). Three research questions were posited for the study which guided the investigation. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire (r=0.87) developed by the researcher and validated by experts in measurement and evaluation in the researcher’s institution as well as a checklist of instructional materials to determine their availability and usage. A sample of two hundred (200) i.e. 175 students and 25 teachers from five schools were randomly selected through systematic random selection by using Table of Random Numbers and selecting every 3rd number. The data were collected and analyzed using arithmetic mean. The cut off mean of 2.50 was used as the basis. The results showed that the use of instructional materials in teaching Health Education was inadequate. It was then recommended that there should be proper supply and utilization of instructional materials in teaching health education in secondary schools. This task should be an all-embracing collective effort of government at all levels, teachers and other relevant stakeholders in the educational sector.
